Overview

Mount Meru, at 4,562 m (14,980 ft), is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a hidden gem inside Arusha National Park. With its dramatic ridges, diverse landscapes, and wildlife encounters on the lower slopes, Meru offers a peaceful and rewarding trekking experience away from the crowds of Kilimanjaro.

Ideal as a standalone climb or as preparation for Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru guarantees unforgettable views of Kilimanjaro and the Meru crater at sunrise. Accommodation is in cosy mountain huts, with an armed ranger accompanying you on the first stages for safety against wildlife.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Moshi

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore the town. In the evening, you will meet your guide for a detailed briefing about the trek.

Day 02 :

Moshi – Momella Gate (1,500 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)

After breakfast at your hotel, you will drive to Arusha National Park. Once registration is complete, the trek begins through open grassland and forest, with chances to see giraffes, buffalo, and other wildlife. You will pass Maio Falls and the famous fig tree arch before reaching Miriakamba Hut in the afternoon.

Day 03 :

Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut (3,550 m) + Optional hike to Little Meru (3,820 m)

Today’s trek is steeper as you climb higher through rainforest into heather and moorland. After about 3–4 hours, you will arrive at Saddle Hut. In the afternoon, you have the option to hike to the top of Little Meru for stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Park.

Day 04 :

Saddle Hut – Socialist Peak (4,562 m) – Miriakamba Hut

You will wake just after midnight for a hot drink and light snack before beginning your summit attempt. With headlamps, you will trek via Rhino Point along the crater rim. After 4–5 hours, you will reach Socialist Peak at sunrise, with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru crater. You will then descend back to Saddle Hut for a meal and continue down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Day 05 :

Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Moshi

After breakfast, you descend on the northern route for 2–3 hours back to Momella Gate, passing through forest where elephants, buffalo, and colobus monkeys are often seen. At the gate, you will say farewell to your mountain crew before returning to your hotel in Moshi.

Day 06 :

Departure

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. Alternatively, you may extend your adventure with a safari or a beach holiday in Zanzibar.
