Overview

The Lemosho Route is considered the most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic views on different sides of the mountain. It is one of the newer routes and a superb choice thanks to its balance of beautiful scenery, low crowds, and a high summit success rate.

The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, starting at Londorossi Gate. The first days pass through lush rainforest before opening to the Shira Plateau, one of the most stunning landscapes on the mountain. From there, the route joins the Machame Route and continues beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field, before summiting via Barafu Camp. The descent follows the Mweka Route.

Day 01 :

Arrival in Moshi

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore the town. In the evening, attend a full briefing with your guide in preparation for the climb.

Day 02 :

Moshi – Londorossi Gate (2,250 m) – Big Tree Camp (2,780 m)

After breakfast, transfer to Londorossi Gate for registration. A short drive brings you to the starting point in the rainforest. Trek through lush forest, home to wildlife, before reaching Big Tree Camp.

Day 03 :

Big Tree Camp – Shira Camp 1 (3,600 m)

Hike through thinning rainforest into heath and moorland. Cross the Shira Ridge before reaching Shira Camp 1, with views of Mount Meru and the Rift Valley.

Day 04 :

Shira Camp 1 – Shira Camp 2 (3,850 m)

A shorter day with gentle climbing across the Shira Plateau, passing giant senecios. Afternoon arrival at Shira Camp 2 with views of the Kibo summit at sunset.

Day 05 :

Shira Camp 2 – Lava Tower (4,640 m) – Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatisation, then descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley. The day ends at Barranco Camp, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites.

Day 06 :

Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

Climb the Barranco Wall, the steepest section of the route, before trekking across ridges with stunning glacier views. Arrive at Karanga Camp by midday.

Day 07 :

Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

A gradual climb leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Early dinner and rest before the night’s climb.

Day 08 :

Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,080 m)

Start just after midnight for the summit attempt. Reach Stella Point (5,730 m) and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend to Barafu, then continue to Mweka Camp.

Day 09 :

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,630 m) – Moshi

Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate for sign-out and a farewell ceremony. Transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and rest at your hotel.

Day 10 :

Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight. Optional extensions to safaris or Zanzibar are available.
