Trip Overview
The Machame Route, also called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers adventurers a diverse journey through lush rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and finally, the icy glaciers near the summit.
With seven days on the mountain, this itinerary allows excellent acclimatisation and gives climbers a strong chance of success. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and panoramic views, the Machame Route combines challenge with beauty. Accommodation along the trail is in tents, offering a true mountain trekking experience.
Kilimanjaro Airport – Moshi (42 km, approx. 55 min drive)
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by our driver and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The day is free for relaxation or optional exploration of Moshi town (transport required). In the evening, you will attend a briefing with your mountain guide to prepare for the climb.
Meals: Dinner & Overnight at hotel (Half Board basis).
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate where the trek begins. Hike through lush rainforest on a sometimes muddy trail, with opportunities to spot colobus monkeys and unique flora. The day ends at Machame Camp, situated on the edge of the forest with a first clear view of the mountain.

Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Today’s stage is shorter but steeper. The vegetation changes to heath and moorland, and the open landscape provides sweeping views of Kilimanjaro and surrounding valleys. You will reach New Shira Camp by mid-afternoon and enjoy a spectacular sunset over Kibo’s glaciers.

Hiking time: 4–6 hours
This is a key acclimatisation day. You ascend to the Lava Tower at 4,640m before descending into the stunning Barranco Valley. The dramatic scenery includes giant lobelias and senecios. The day ends at Barranco Camp, one of the most beautiful sites on the mountain.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours
After breakfast, tackle the steep climb up the Barranco Wall, which rewards you with spectacular views. The trail continues below the Breach Wall before descending into the Karanga Valley. Overnight is at Karanga Camp, with plenty of time to rest and adjust to the altitude.

Today’s trek leads across rocky and barren terrain to Barafu Camp. From here, you can view both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This camp serves as the base for your summit attempt. An early dinner is provided, and you will rest before the midnight start of your summit climb.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours
At around midnight, begin the final ascent with headlamps lighting the way. The climb to Stella Point (5,752m) is steep and challenging, but the sunrise over Africa is unforgettable. A short trek along the crater rim leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp for the night.

Hiking time: 10–13 hours
Enjoy breakfast before making the final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you will receive your Kilimanjaro climbing certificate. Your driver will take you back to Moshi, where you can relax with a warm shower and celebrate your success.

Hiking time: 2–3 hours
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure flight. Alternatively, extend your adventure with a safari, a day excursion, or a beach holiday in Zanzibar, Mafia, or Fanjove.
