Our Story

The Beginning of a Journey

Once upon a time, on the majestic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, a story of friendship and ambition began to unfold. Romel and Issa, both sons of the Kilimanjaro Region, shared not only the same soil but also the same passion for adventure and the same love for their homeland. What started as youthful determination soon grew into a lifelong bond, as enduring as the mountain itself.

Rising Up

Their journey started in 1992, when they worked as humble porters, carrying heavy loads for climbers who came from all over the world to conquer Africa’s tallest peak. Day by day, step by step, they endured the challenges of the mountain. Through hard work, they became skilled cooks and later assistant guides, mastering the trails, the weather, and the stories hidden within the rugged slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Becoming Legends

Romel’s determination pushed him to the top of Kilimanjaro more times than he could count, eventually surpassing 500 successful summits. His resilience and energy made him a legend among adventurers who spoke his name with admiration. At his side, Issa’s quiet strength and deep knowledge of the land led him to more than 300 summits, earning equal respect and recognition. Together, they became symbols of endurance and skill, admired by fellow climbers and the community alike.

Founding KAT-MOSHI

In 1999, driven by their love for Kilimanjaro and the desire to share its wonders with the world, Romel and Issa founded Kilimandscharo Active Tours, known today as KAT-Moshi. Romel brought unmatched energy and mountain experience, while Issa contributed sharp business acumen and strategic vision. The company quickly gained a reputation for providing unforgettable adventures, combining professionalism with authentic Tanzanian warmth.

The Name

The name “Kilimandscharo” reflects both history and heritage. It acknowledges the German influence in the region, recalling the early days when German travellers first explored Kilimanjaro’s slopes. At the same time, it honours Issa’s years among the German community, where valuable relationships were forged. This blend of cultural respect and personal experience became part of the foundation that shaped KAT- Moshi into a company rooted in both tradition and global connection.
