Our Founders Story
Once upon a time, amidst the majestic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, there existed a bond between two friends that was as enduring as the ancient rocks of the mountain itself. Romel and Issa, natives of the Kilimanjaro Region, shared a passion for adventure and a deep-rooted connection to their homeland.
Their journey began in 1992 when they started as humble mountain porters, carrying the loads of adventurous climbers who sought to conquer Africa’s tallest peak. Through sweat and toil, they ascended the ranks, becoming skilled cooks and eventually assistant guides, learning the intricacies of the mountain’s terrain and the secrets it held within its rugged beauty.
Romel, with his unwavering determination, summited Mount Kilimanjaro more times than he could count, his spirit as unyielding as the mountain itself. Issa, with a quiet strength and innate knowledge of the land, followed closely behind, his heart beating in rhythm with the pulse of Kilimanjaro.
As the years passed, their experiences multiplied, and their expertise grew. Romel became a legend among climbers, reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro over 500 times and counting, his name whispered in awe by those who dared to tread in his footsteps. Issa, with a decade of mountain mastery under his belt, joined his friend in the ranks of the elite guides, his own tally of successful summits surpassing 300.
How it Started
In 1999, inspired by their love for the mountain and their desire to share its wonders with the world, Romel and Issa founded Kilimandscharo Active Tours, affectionately known as KAT MOSHI. With Romel’s boundless energy and Issa’s keen business acumen, the company quickly gained recognition as a premier safari company, offering unforgettable adventures in the shadow of Kilimanjaro.
The Name
The name “Kilimandscharo” was a nod to the German influence in the region, a reminder of the early days when German visitors first explored the slopes of the mountain. It also paid homage to Issa’s time spent living among the German community, forging connections that would prove invaluable in the years to come.
